FACE reading. Now that’s an art worth learning.
You could suss out the help you’re about to hire. Learn if your boss is a lout. What about that girl you’ve been dying to ask out? It would be handy information to know whether she’s the type who’s going to dominate the conversation — or eat a hole into your pocket.
The face can tell us a lot about a person. For example, the nose represents wealth for men. A woman with a good nose will likely have a good husband as the nose represents the husband’s star, said feng shui consultant Joey Yap.
Here we take a basic approach to face reading, paying attention to three of the five “officers” — the eyes, nose and mouth. The other two “officers” are the ears and the eyebrows.
We asked Yap to take a look at three famous women and tell us what their prominent features have in store for them.
Jennifer Lopez
The high nose bridge and small protrusion on her nose tell us that JLo has a strong personality.
Nine out of 10 people with a knot on their nose suffer from marriage problems. So it’s no surprise then that the Latino bombshell’s marriages to Ojani Noa (February 1997-March 1998) and Chris Judd (October 2001-July 2002) ended after brief periods. She must change her character, said Yap.
JLo’s (right) success in her career is denoted by her high nose, which equates to high self esteem.
She has what the Chinese refer to as “peach blossom” eyes, which are glossy and framed by long eyelashes.
These peepers snagged her three more leading men: there was a two-year romance with hip-hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, her ill-fated engagement to Ben Affleck and her present 13-month marriage to Latino singer Marc Anthony.
Peach blossom eyes are also known as bedroom eyes; they have an exceptional ability to attract the opposite sex.
Her downward-turned nose indicates that she will never be taken advantage of while its rounded tip hints of the ability to negotiate.
Nicole Kidman
Kidman’s most pronounced feature is her forehead. “It’s too high,” said Yap.
“The Chinese refer to this kind of forehead as hak low kong (harbinger of bad luck to the husband). It’s not bad luck per se, but it tells of a wife who wants to control the relationship.”
Kidman’s (left) husband should ideally be 10 years younger or 10 years older.
Kidman’s 11-year marriage to Tom Cruise ended in 2001. She is five years his junior.
A forehead is considered to be high when more than four fingers can be placed between the eyebrows and the hairline.
“Her forehead is also slightly rounded, the sign of a perfectionist, one who is attracted to status and power. She has a future in politics. (US Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice has a similar forehead.
“Kidman’s protruding forehead indicates a spiritual inclination.”
Oprah Winfrey
With a net worth in excess of US$1 billion (RM3.75 billion), Winfrey is ranked No. 1 in Forbes magazine’s Top 100 Celebrities 2005 and was rated the ninth most powerful woman in the world. The chairman of Harpo Inc has built an empire that spans magazines (O, The Oprah Magazine) and a television talk show that is aired in 112 countries.
Does it show on her face? “Look at her nose — it’s much bigger than JLo’s and Kidman’s,” said Yap.
“Her wide nostrils and strong nose demonstrate an ability to generate wealth.”
Winfrey (right) may have piles of cash but romance isn’t on her side, according to Yap. Her only setback in life will be the emotional stuff.
“Her downward-sloping eyes tell of poor luck in romance. She does not derive satisfaction in a relationship because her partner will find it difficult to fulfil her needs.
“Women like Winfrey also do not trust men easily — in fact they probably won’t get married.”
Yap also pointed to her mouth, which is very much larger than her nose. “The nose also represents the husband’s star. Her larger mouth means that she is larger than life compared to her husband. It (larger mouth) is also a sign of loneliness. It is best for people with this feature to cohabit rather than to get married.”
The face can also foretell our health. “Winfrey’s laughter line does not cross her mouth, which indicates possible health problems when she turns 60. She may have to retire then,” said Yap.
Winfrey is 51. Incidentally, she has already spoken through Harpo of plans to retire after the 2005-06 season, which will mark her 20th year in the talkshow business.
Yap (left) employs face reading only as a tool to support feng shui and Chinese astrology readings.
Employers may be tempted to read the faces of the staff they wish to hire but Yap cautions against this.
“I tried it when I first started but I couldn’t find anyone I liked! I had to be more practical,” he admitted. Whenever corporations seek his expertise in this field, he always asks for the candidate’s birth date.
But won’t makeup and cosmetic surgery camouflage one’s features? “No. The bone structure of the skull remains the same. Bones are rarely cut during cosmetic surgery. Indentations, mounds of flesh will have a story to tell.”
A cleft lip, for example, bears meaning but Yap would insist on an astrology reading for a more accurate interpretation.
“Face fortune comes from the heart,” he said, adding that “however, after surgery, one may feel more confident and therefore one’s fortune may change.”
